Now is the time to schedule one-on-one marketing appointments with your clients and obtain scope of appointments to be ready for Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). CMS delays Medicare Advantage Supplemental benefit notice requirements

As of September 8, 2025, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is delaying enforcement of Medicare Advantage (MA) mid-year Notice of Supplemental Benefits notification requirements for contract year 2026 and beyond. The enforcement pause will remain in effect until further notice.

This requirement would have required MA organizations to send annual notifications to enrollees about unused supplemental benefits between June 30 and July 31, beginning in 2026. CMS has determined that a temporary enforcement pause is necessary to address logistical concerns and reevaluate current requirements.

Connect with your clients through member stories

Explore a fresh approach to build relationships with your current clients and attract new ones with a video from Bo, a UnitedHealthcare member. Bo shares his personal experience navigating Medicare at 65, explains the enrollment timeline, and highlights the benefits of exploring coverage options during the Annual Enrollment Period. By leveraging Bo's story, you can deliver personalized support that helps empower your clients to make informed decisions about their Medicare coverage.

Reminder: CMS may auto enroll some consumers currently in a Medicare Advantage plan without Part D coverage into a MAPD plan

Did you know that if a client enrolls in a Medicare Advantage plan that does not include Part D coverage (like the MA Only Patriot Plans in some markets), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) may automatically enroll some consumers every month into a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan? This experience—known as auto- or facilitated-enrollment1 –can be confusing for members who may receive their Part D coverage elsewhere, such as through the VA or other organizations.

Here's what you need to know about the process, so you can help your clients better understand when auto-enrollment may occur.

  • Full Dual members are auto-enrolled as required by CMS into an MAPD plan after enrolling into a Medicare Advantage plan without Part D coverage. Members will receive an opt-out notice. They must submit the opt-out by the 15th of the following month to be reinstated on their original effective date back into the plan in which they enrolled. Members who opt out after this deadline will be re-enrolled on the first day of the following month.
  • Low-Income Subsidy (LIS)/Extra Help members have facilitated enrollments as required by CMS into an MAPD plan after enrolling into a Medicare Advantage plan without Part D coverage. They must cancel the MAPD enrollment by the day before their effective date to be reinstated back into the plan in which they enrolled. Members who opt out after this deadline will be re-enrolled on the first day of the following month.

Help your clients by ensuring they know if they continue to be eligible for full dual or Low-Income Subsidy (LIS)/Extra Help or Medicaid, they may be automatically enrolled into an MAPD plan when they enroll into a new Medicare Advantage plan without Part D, per CMS guidelines. If they don't wish to enroll in the MAPD plan, they must decline and ask to be opted out of future auto- or facilitated enrollments.

For questions, members can call the customer service number on their UnitedHealthcare ID card.
