UPMC for Life Prescription and Diabetic Drug Updates

November 22, 2021

UPMC for Life’s 2022 plans include many exciting benefits that can improve the overall health of members. One of the ways they help members live their best lives is by providing affordable prescription drug coverage. With so many improvements, they wanted to provide you with a recap of the positive changes to their prescription and diabetic drug coverage.

$0 preferred generic prescriptions―More medications were added to UPMC's preferred generic (Tier 1) drug list for 2022. Members can take advantage of a $0 copay when filling these medications at preferred pharmacies. Click here to view more information.

Cost savings on diabetic medications―Members can take advantage of copays as low as $10 in the initial coverage stage for covered (Tier 2), brand-name, non-insulin diabetic medications that help lower blood sugar.* And they can also save money when they fill covered diabetic insulin medications in the Part D coverage gap, otherwise known as the “donut hole.” They’ll pay the same copays in the Part D initial coverage and coverage gap donut hole stages, which can save hundreds! Learn more at upmchp.us/diabetic-wellness.

Cost savings on generic medications in the donut hole (Tier 1 and Tier 2)―UPMC for Life HMO Rx (HMO) plan members have additional coverage through the Medicare Part D coverage gap, otherwise known as the “donut hole.” Learn more at upmchp.us/prescription-coverage.

Preferred pharmacies―Preferred pharmacies offer low copays for covered prescriptions. This means members will pay less simply by filling their prescriptions at these pharmacies.

  • Some preferred retail pharmacies include Giant Eagle, Rite Aid, Sam’s Club, Walgreens, Walmart, and Weis. Search for a preferred retail pharmacy near you at upmchp.us/pharmacy-finder.
  • UPMC's preferred mail-order pharmacy, Express Scripts, can even deliver 90-day prescriptions right to members’ door! Members can try mail order by asking their doctor to send their prescriptions to Express Scripts, or call 1-877-787-6279 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTY: 1-800-899-2114.
