Important: OneTouch diabetic supplies coverage ends August 3

Starting August 3, UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans with preferred diabetic testing supplies will no longer cover LifeScan OneTouch® diabetic test strips and meters.

To help support this transition, Ascensia Contour® diabetic supply products have been added as a new preferred brand option, effective June 1, 2025. Members will continue to have access to the following preferred brands, which are available at a $0 copay:

  • Covered glucose monitors: Contour Plus Blue, Contour Next EZ, Contour Next Gen, Contour Next One, Accu-Chek Guide Me and Accu-Chek Guide
  • Covered test strips: Contour, Contour Plus, Contour Next, Accu-Chek Guide and Accu-Chek Aviva Plus

Members currently using LifeScan OneTouch supplies will receive a letter from UnitedHealthcare in early July. These communications will highlight the additional options available and instruct members to call their provider for a new prescription. The 2025 Enrollment Guides will be updated with the covered products for you to reference when speaking with clients.

Value Based Insurance Design (VBID) Model terminating for 2026

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is terminating the Medicare Advantage (MA) Value Based Insurance Design (VBID) Model at the end of 2025. The MA VBID model gave participating MA plans the flexibility to offer non-medical related supplemental benefits, such as healthy food and utilities as well as cost-sharing assistance for prescription drugs to chronically ill and underserved populations.

While VBID will not be available in 2026, MA plans will continue to be able to offer Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI) to members who meet the CMS qualifying criteria. This includes having one or more qualifying complex conditions, having a high risk for hospitalization and needing intensive care coordination.

What this means:

  • Unlike VBID, SSBCI does not include benefits related to prescription drugs or Part D
  • Members will need to meet specific eligibility criteria to access non-health related MA plan benefits that are offered through SSBCI (like healthy food or utilities)
  • All members may continue to have access to their benefits for primarily health-related supplemental benefits, such as over-the-counter (OTC) items
