Recently, AHIP surveyed people enrolled in supplemental insurance about their experience with these plans. Virtually all consumers -95% of them - are satisfied with their coverage, with 90% saying that their plan helps pay for needed critical medical expenses and eases concerns about preserving financial security.
Supplemental insurance helps cover expenses not covered by primary health insurance, such as expenses due to specific situations, like accidents or hospitals stays (hospital indemnity insurance); specific diseases, like cancer; or nonmedical expenses such as childcare, travel, and lost income due to illness or injury.
Key findings from the survey include:
- Supplemental insurance enrollees continue to be overwhelmingly satisfied with their plans and rate them highly.
- Consumers are particularly satisfied with the service they receive from health insurance providers. When asked about interactions with their plans, survey respondents were overwhelmingly satisfied with the ability to quickly receive benefits, the easy and efficient claims-filing process, and the knowledge of their supplemental insurance agent.
- Supplemental insurance plans are viewed as something to rely on: offering peace of mind, ensuring high-quality care, and being there when policy holders need it.
- Having supplemental insurance has prevented consumers from experiencing financial hardships or being forced to make choices between their health and their financial well-being.
